Göteborg Culture Festival
Summer 2012 saw us travel to Sweden with our inflatable mobile exhibition space, The Big M, to the Göteborg Culture Festival (Göteborg’s Kulturkalas). We screened a contemporary video programme of works by filmmakers from the UK and the Nordic, co-curated with Göteborg Culture Festival (Sweden) and A Gallery (Göteborg, Sweden) on the theme of Rights to a Future. Our trip was a great success, attracting over 7000 visitors over 5 days.
Rights to a Future sees artists and film-makers use short film to consider our many possible futures. At a time of austerity, and global economic downturn, we considered the impact on communities and individuals alike, and the basic human rights that need to be defended. Artists and filmmakers responded to questions such as:
The tour featured works by Carlos S. Alvarez (DK), Sarah Bayliss (UK), Adam Butcher (UK), Samantha Moore (UK), Jonas Nilsson (SE), Chris Oakley (UK), Eva Olsson (SE), John Quinn (UK), Daniel Spence (UK), Borjana Ventzizslavova (UK/BG).
Caroline Theobald, Honorary Consul for Sweden and Chairman of International Newcastle says: 'I’m so pleased that the collaborative work that we have been engaged in with West Sweden and The Creative Links programme has produce tangible results for D6. It’s really good news when innovative creative companies like D6 can export their services whilst creating ever stronger links with their peers in Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia.'
Clymene Christoforou Co-Director at D6 says: 'This is a great opportunity for us and The Big M. We have put together an exciting programme and had a great reception in Gothenburg this summer.'
David Franzén Curator for the Gothenburg Culture Festival and A Gallery says: 'We are looking forward to seeing The Big M in the Gothenburg Culture Festival this August. The annual festival has been running for many years, giving over 750 000 people the opportunity to enjoy almost 1200 free events. We are very pleased to be working with D6 to present the ‘Rights to a Future’ screening programme in The Big M for the first time in Sweden. Borås Contemporary Art Museum together with the Framefestival and the Novemberfestival are also contributing special screenings alongside ‘Rights to a Future’ in The Big M.'
The Rights to a Future screening programme and the Swedish tour is funded by Göteborg Culture Festival and supported by A Gallery. The development period for this project was supported by UK Trade & Investment.

Artists and filmmakers responded to questions such as:
- As the divide between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ grow, which aspects of our health, safety and happiness are under threat, and which are being upheld?
- Has access to knowledge and information fed our souls, or starved our ambitions?
- As our children grow up in an increasingly complex world, are we still defending their right to a childhood?
