lucy nychai

Lucy Nychai is a multimedia artist and curator whose practice spans film, painting and installation.  We have a long running relationship with Lucy, beginning in 2019 when she undertook a research residency. In the autumn of 2022 she returned to the UK, joining us as curator in residence for (Re)Grounding, our partnership programme with IZOLYATSIA, as part of the British Council UK/Ukraine Season.  She is a D6 Associate Artist.

Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, her homeland, has been at the forefront of her practice for the last nine years. Systems of Defence and her Birds series explore the devastating impact of the war and have been exhibited in the UK and Europe.

She is co-founder of the
NVAIR residency space, which, following the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, she transformed into an emergency shelter to help those fleeing the occupied regions of the country. Lucy and fellow NVAIR curators have formed a project called Internal Elements to support artists still in Ukraine to continue their practice, exhibit and sell their work online. She also helps curate art projects for children in Ukraine through Art for Children of Ukraine, a Scottish-Ukrainian charity.
