Featured projecTS

To celebrate the (Re)Grounding online exhibition (live until 28 March 2025), we spotlight some of the artists involved.

(Re)Grounding: Dasha podoltseva

What does the future look like? Dasha explores the theme of a future that has not yet arrived. Using materials from advertisements and mass culture from the 1980s, she creates an absurdist world that assures a safe, pleasant and fashionable future. This is far removed from the current global crisis in international relations, uncertainty in the political future of democratic countries, and the threat of isolationism, dictatorship and populism.

(RE)GROUNDING: Oleksandr Sirous

Oleksandr uses depth sensing technology to convert the physical world into a digital space of floating data. Here he shares more about the themes of disconnection and reconnection, drawing from the methodology of deterritorialization, where established territories and boundaries are dissolved and redefined. In this case, the human body and environment are deterritorialized into a fluid digital space, reforming within a generative framework that reflects new kinds of social, physical and environmental connections.

(Re)Grounding: Dariia Dantseva

During her (Re)Grounding residency in Cyprus, Dariia explored the impact of copper mining on local communities. In collaboration with artist Marisa Satsia, she developed a hands-on workshop where participants used DIY biology and open-source tools and methodologies to conduct scientific experiments on the contamination caused by copper mining to the bodies of water in Skouriotissa and Lefke.

(Re)Grounding: Alexandra Clod

Alex researched coal mining communities in the North East of England and the copper mines of Lefke and Skouriotissa in Cyprus, creating connections between these landscapes and her homeland in Ukraine. While focussed on the climate crisis, (Re)Grounding has unfolded against Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the complex intersections between social, political and environmental issues, which Alex responds to in her work.

DEEDS LIVE AFTER MEN UPON THE EARTH BY NISHA DUGGAL

CORE MARKS BY KATE SWEENEY

Nisha Duggal's research centred on Cragside House and the life and influence of its owner William Armstrong. She presents a new series of drawings alongside excerpts of research and childhood memories that bring to light the complex legacy of Armstrong -  engineer, inventor-genius of the North East and arms dealer.
Kate Sweeney's  research is the foundation for work seeking ways to articulate ways queer and adoptive heritages occupy and explore marginal and shifting space in order to traverse traditional, patriarchal notions of inheritance and legacy.
