Standing with people seeking Sanctuary
D6: Culture in Transit joins with Refugee Week 2022 to celebrate the contributions, creativity and resilience of people seeking safety and sanctuary. At D6 we have a history of nearly 30 years of working with people and artists who have explored belonging, identity and migration together. Through our current programme Sanctuary and Culture we create spaces of care for creative practice, exchange and learning for artists with lived experience of forced migration, exile or displacement.
This year we are marking Refugee Week in a number of ways.
D6 open studio and Artists Connecting in Transition information event
Date: 23 June 2022
Time: 16:00 – 18:00
Place: D6: Culture in Transit, 5 Charlotte Square, Newcastle, NE1 4XF
On Thursday 23 June we are opening our studios. People are welcome to drop in to find out about our international projects, see current work in progress by artist Jane Bizimana and learn about our open call with Artists Connecting in Transition (ACT).
As part of the open studio, we will be running information sessions about ACT - a new international collaboration programme hosted by D6 (UK), arthereistanbul (Turkey), MedeArts (Jordan) and the Fanak Fund (who work across the Arab speaking world). D6 is looking to select and host two visual artists currently based in the North East of England with lived experience of forced migration, exile or displacement who are interested in applying for the UK residencies. This drop-in event will be an opportunity to meet the team and have conversations about the project.
To confirm a place, please email Andrea Carter, Lead Producer at [email protected].
Future Pasts community walk - 25 June
Future Pasts is artist Henna Asikainen’s latest commission with D6. The participatory project invites families and people with lived experience of migration and displacement, often new to the North East, to come together to discover and explore local landscapes. As Henna says: ‘The approach is grounded in the notions of friendship and radical hospitality and recognition - meaning to make welcome and to dissolve the barriers that prevent people from participating fully in their communities.'
Hadrian’s Wall as the site for the walks provides a rich location for reflection on what it means to belong and the interconnections between communities throughout time. The wall acts as a powerful reminder of the long history of migration to Britain. During the Roman Empire, many people from across Europe and North Africa lived, served and ruled along the wall, bringing with them local customs, plants and animals that are with us today.
The walk on 25 June is for families new to the area and we have worked with our partners at North East Solidarity and Teaching to invite them to take part.
The project is delivered in partnership with D6: Culture in Transit; National Trust; Newcastle University; CPRE Northumberland; Northumberland National Park Authority, and North East Solidarity and Teaching.
