sanctuary and culture

Our Sanctuary and Culture programme works with artists and cultural practitioners who are refugees or seeking asylum

Working in partnership with the West End Refugee Service, local refugee support agencies, artists and cultural organisations and Newcastle City of Sanctuary we are working towards the development of an equitable and sustainable arts sector. Sanctuary and Culture is a safe, welcoming and creative environment which artists can access through residencies that offer space for creativity, peer support and professional development.

The programme includes the development of a North East network for exploratory conversations focusing on learning, listening and understanding to bespoke training offered by a range of experts across the arts and refugee sector. Deepening knowledge and understanding of the systemic immigration challenges and associated issues that impact upon artists and cultural practitioners with lived experience of displacement is vital.

Working with the excellent West End Refugee Service skillsmatch programme, which matches professionals who are refugees or seeking asylum with volunteer opportunities, D6 continues to welcome existing and new volunteers into our programme.

Through this programme we seek to action the necessary step change towards a regional cultural sector that is equitable, representative and responsive to the needs of a diverse range of artists and cultural practitioners.
