ACT: open studio in Istanbul
Artists Connecting in Transition (ACT) is a new international programme connecting artists with lived experience of exile in Jordan, Turkey and the UK. It centres on artistic practice and international exchange in the context of significant global challenges and inequalities around forced migration and displacement.
The six participating artists have produced new work during their residencies in Irbid, Istanbul and Newcastle. The challenges of limited opportunity to travel or move between countries made it imperative that their work could be exhibited as part of an open studio at arthereistanbul in the Kadikoy district of Istanbul.
ACT artists' projects
Amak Mahmoodian - Dreams, photography and film
Ammar Alhamidi - Uncertain Notes, film and poetry
Hazem Waked - Untitled, a series of acrylic painting works in progress
Hescham Karschan - MetaSelf, film and virtual reality
Mohammed Bitar - sound performance work in progress
Zariq Rosita-Hanif - The Women Like Her, cut-out animation and poetry
The open studio was a fantastic opportunity to share their art with public audiences and to delve deeper into some of the themes of the programme. Through workshops and hybrid meetings, the artists and partners have been exploring critical questions around creating equitable approaches to the inclusion of displaced artists, including…
How are dialogues of exile explored in artistic practice?
How are connections made and spaces created?
Where do creative journeys lead to?
These questions form the basis of a research paper that will capture the experiences and learnings of ACT and make recommendations for approaches to support artists whose practice has been displaced by forced migration. This is being led by the Fanak Fund and will be published later this year.
ACT is in partnership between by D6: Culture in Transit (UK), Arthereistanbul (Turkey), MedeArts (Jordan), and the Fanak Fund (who work across the Arab-speaking world). It is funded by a British Council International Collaboration Grant.
