The Deep End, Woodhorn Museum
The Deep End was a showcase of digital artworks at Woodhorn Museum between October 2013 and January 2014 created by arts & design students from Northumberland College (Ashington) and a selection of works from schools and youth groups from across the North East as part of our On the Precipice workshop programme during The Big M tour.
The exhibition is the result of a week-long masterclass in digital technologies from established artists Lindsay Duncanson and Marek Gabrsych. Northumberland College's art & design students from all artistic disciplines including fine art, fashion, graphics and photography collaborated to create a three-screen short film inspired by their visit to D6’s inflatable mobile cinema and exhibition space, The Big M, when it was at Woodhorn Museum.
The theme On the Precipice gave them the opportunity to explore contemporary landscape and the effect humans have had on the natural environment. Students interpreted the theme in a number of ways and produced films on gaming culture, popular culture, religion and the natural world.
The exhibition also featured a selection of the digital artworks created throughout the North East by various participating schools and youth groups as part of the On the Precipice workshop programme including: Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy (Gateshead), Cedars Academy (Gateshead), Lingley House Primary School (Gateshead), St. Joseph's Catholic Junior School (Birtley), St. Thomas More R.C. High School (North Shields), VODA Volunteering Centre (North Tyneside), mima Dreamers (Middlesbrough), I Wonder Why? (Middlesbrough), Berwick Academy (Berwick-upon-Tweed), Duchess's Community High School (Alnwick), Berwick Youth Project (Berwick-upon-Tweed) and Longridge Towers School (Berwick-upon-Tweed).
The Deep End is a partnership project between Woodhorn Museum, D6, Northumberland College and Northumberland Arts Development (NAD). On the Precipice is curated by Kelly Richardson and produced by D6. Our programme partners include: Toffee Factory, Gateshead Council, North Tyneside Council, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Woodhorn Museum and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. On the Precipice and The Big M tour was kindly supported by Arts Council England's Strategic Touring Programme.
