Sneha Solanki
Sneha Solanki is a northeast based artist who was in residence during March 2013 to research her new work ‘Biotechnology Spell Machine’ (working title).
The spell machine will consist of thirteen spells, with each individual spell exploring a certain social or political area of Synthetic Biology. These spells will exist as a programme specially created to instruct and design new synthetically constructed organisms. Witchcraft will however provide an antagonistic element animating the spells as thirteen works. A spell could be developed for example with the focus of food and formatted as an edible performance or event.
Synthetic Biology is promising to solve the global food shortage and environmental problems with the construction of new biological organisms which are entirely 'man-made' and have not yet existed in the world.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sneha Solanki works with digital media, technology and science. Her practice extends to installation, sound, image, web and performance. Solanki has created works from the invisible signals emitted from military infrastuctures, with computer viruses and recently with bacteria. Her most recent work 'Super-natural' visualises the material effects of invisible and immaterial forces through the creation of a new and unique life-form- 'Tituba', following the protocols of the emergent area of Synthetic Biology.
Solanki has exhibited and performed widely, including; CCA, Glasgow, UK; ICA, London, UK;Contemporary Art Centre, Riga, LV; FO.AM, Brussels, BE; The Museum of Modern Art, Belgrade, CS; Watson Institute, Boston, USA. Solanki has been nominated for the 2013 Northern Arts Prize.
