Nandita Palchoudhuri

'Calcutta Lights' by Nandita Palchoudhuri was commissioned for Enlightenment, Durham City's festival of light in November 2008.

Nandita visited the UK and was in residence at D6 during 2008. The commission developed as a response to the City of Durham. 'Calcutta Lights' was a collaboration of signature images of Durham incorporated in the traditional giant gates that span the roads of Calcutta during the Durga Festival every year. The Bamboo panels were encrusted with 120,000 hand wrapped bulbs and animated to create a spectacle, unique to Chandannagar in Eastern India.

Nandita Palchoudhuri is a Social Entrepreneur, working internationally in the field of Indian folk arts, crafts and performances. Her work aims to create contemporary expressions using traditional skills. From the wealth of Indian techniques and traditional practices she designs and delivers installations, exhibitions, educational workshops, seminars, and lecture-demonstrations.

She is also Support Chairperson –Trustee of India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore, India's most significant private Arts fund.
