D6: culture in transit
Zuzanna Huskova, Ordinary Fiction

Marek Šulík & Zuzanna Huskova

In June 2013, Marek's latest production Homelands was premiered at Sheffield Doc Fest. ‘Homelands’ is a visual and media arts community residency project, initiated by D6, which took place in the North East region over a three-year period, and included residencies in the UK for regional and international artists linking our Diaspora communities.

‘Homelands’ explores ideas surrounding home, migration and a collective sense of belonging. The project supported a shared cultural language of expression and promoted a better mutual understanding, helping to support people to express a strong sense of identity, and armed them with confidence and tools to combat prejudice.

In the first year we worked with North East based Slovakian artist Zuzana Hruskova and Marek Šulík, a filmmaker based in Bratislava. They worked closely with families from the Slovak/Czech Roma community in the west end of Newcastle.

Homelands was supported by Northern Rock Foundation, Newcastle City Council and the ‘Make Your Mark’ fund.
