ISIS Arts seeks to ensure that no present or potential member of staff or project participant is treated less favourably than another on grounds of age (up to statutory retirement age), class colour, disability, ethnic origin, gender, marital status, political persuasion or sexual orientation. ISIS Arts premises have limited access.
ISIS Arts background
With extraordinary artists and like-minded partners we produce temporary works of art, which are embedded in place, but drawn from the universality of the human condition. The commissioned work, and importantly the process for engagement, creates moments for exchange. From the newly arrived to the long term workless, from the young European to the older Brexiteer our programme explores what we share and what divides us.
We do this by partnering with organisations who share our ambition, in the UK and abroad, and with artists whose practice is rooted in a desire to tell stories that might not have been told. Key projects in this period include:
CORNERS East Durham
ISIS Arts is delighted to be working with East Durham Creates to bring CORNERS of Europe to East Durham. CORNERS draws threads between people and places on the edges of Europe with 55 artists and 11 European partners. Through temporary co-commissions the stories revealed are passed on and retold in another town or city on the edge of Europe.
CORNERS takes place in Shotton, Horden and Blackhall from 19-30 where nine international artists will work closely with local groups to develop three artworks for public exhibition.
Common Ground
Common Ground explores the role of public space as a place for free expression, social encounter and shared responsibility. Common Ground creates a space for shared experiences to understand each others’ beliefs and values; a space to explore and learn, where collective memory is revisited and reshaped and where a common future culture is created. Common Ground combines a programme of artistic production and exhibition; creative writing and artist exchange with lead artists Henna Askainen and Juan Delgado.
‘Common Ground’ takes place in Newcastle’s west end and we will work directly with 300 participants, including young people from Slovak and Czech Roma community with Chat Trust, migrant and refugee women from Angelou Centre and older residents from the established community with Greening Wingrove. Over two years an expected 800 live audience will experience art within public spaces with a further 10,000 online.
Juan DelGado will curate an international programme of artist film and video with refugee artists to be shown in our inflatable space, the Big M and in a city centre venue (to be confirmed).
The work produced will be exhibited at the end of October as part of the Platforma Arts and Refugee Festival.
