WE WELCOME HAMZEH AL HUSSIEN
We welcome Hamzeh Al Hussein and Curious Monkey Theatre to the D6 studio. They are busy working on Penguin - a one-man show exploring Hamzeh’s life from Syria to Gateshead. We’re loving seeing how different aspects of the show are coming together - from script readings to all the work that goes into movement, lighting and sound.
Penguin is performed by Hamzeh, devised together with director Amy Golding and dramaturg Lindsay Rodden. Penguin takes you on a personal tour of the four places Hamzeh knows best: his village in the mountains; Za’atari camp in Jordan; Gateshead – a town famous for an angel; and inside his mind – the place where only he knows, a place full of music, dancing, fantasies and marbles.
Hamzeh is a disabled artist from Syria who arrived five years ago in Gateshead, North East England as part of the UK’s Syrian Resettlement Programme. He was first introduced to performing during his six years in a refugee camp where he trained with a Spanish NGO in physical theatre. He performed in various productions there and facilitated drama and theatre projects with disabled children in the camp. Hamzeh is a joyous performer who brings positivity, warmth and a lot of humour, and has countless stories to share of his incredible life. Hamzeh explores his lived experience of disability and seeking sanctuary through his autobiographical work. In 2018 he joined the Arriving project, Curious Monkey’s ongoing creative project for people seeking sanctuary.
Penguin will tour UK theatres in Autumn 2023.
