D6: culture in transit
Dominic Smith, Invisible Soap Opera
The Volunteers, Dominic Smith, 2018

DOMINIC SMITH

Dominic is an artist based in the North East of England, and  is currently working with D6 as a digital curator on our CONTESTED DESIRES programme, and as an associate artist.

Dominic's practice reflects his interest in the collaborative nature of digital platforms, digital material culture, new technologies, the motivations and behaviours of participants and experimental approaches to audience engagement via digital means and liveness. In recent years his work has expanded to incorporate darkroom and lens-based practices to explore remote and invisible processes.

We've worked with Dominic across several past projects, including: CORNERS Live, an exiting hybrid online platform comprising a 24/7 radio broadcast;  2007 research residency Invisible Soap Opera in which Dominic created a small virtual private network, and invited participants to join the network and  communicate. Several actors also joined the server involving the others in an act of 'invisible theatre'. In 2018 we also commissioned Dominic to create The Volunteers for story telling platform Mural. Volunteers was based on an interview with the Quartermaster of Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, and is also an autobiographical moment where he shares recent investigations into the richness and heritage of the North East Coast.
