Degna Stone is a poet and editor working with us an an Associate Artist, and has also been recently commissioned to reflect on our Crafting Nations series, part of our international programme, CONTESTSED DESIRES.
Degna worked in the literary department at Live Theatre, Newcastle for 12 years before joining Eclipse Theatre Company as an Enabler on their three-year project Slate: Black · Arts · World.
She is a co-founder and former Managing Editor of Butcher’s Dog poetry magazine, and a Contributing Editor at The Rialto. She received a major Northern Writers Award in 2015, and her latest pamphlet Handling Stolen Goods, which explores issues of race and class, is published by Peepal Tree Press.
Her work has appeared in: The Book of Newcastle (Comma Press), Ten: Poets of the New Generation and A Mighty Stream (Bloodaxe), Writing Motherhood (Seren), Urban Myths and Legends and Some Cannot Be Caught (The Emma Press), Crossings (Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts) and Filigree (Peepal Tree Press).
She is a fellow of The Complete Works III, Obsidian Foundation and Peepal Tree/Inscribe writer development programmes and is the recipient of a prestigious Hawthornden Fellowship. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Newcastle University and received a Northern Writers' Award for poetry in 2015. As well as being an Associate Artist with D6: Culture in Transit and The Poetry Exchange, she is currently a PhD candidate at Northumbria University.
In a parallel universe, she is making good use of her undergraduate degree in Fashion and Textile Design.
