Bower Fleming Plewis, Every Trick in the Book (still), 2010
Bower Fleming Plewis, Every Trick in the Book (still), 2010

Deborah Bowers, Mat Fleming & Harriet Plewis  (UK)

Deborah Bower, Mat Fleming and Harriet Plewis (Bower Fleming Plewis) are north east based artists who were in residence at the D6 studio in May 2013. Bower Fleming Plewis spent their time researching and exploring empty and abandoned spaces in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area with a view to employing these spaces as temporary ‘sets’ for their new collaborative film work.

At a time when space is perhaps no longer at such a premium but remains a hotly contested issue, Bower Fleming Plewis have begun to map and survey property that is currently vacant or out of use.

Their research developed through moving image, manipulating footage of the empty spaces and compositing them together to make new fictional spaces. The trio explored what can be performed/enacted in these unoccupied spaces and what cannot: which gestures and narratives can fill these voids?

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Bower Fleming Plewis are artists that co-author 16mm film works. Via their work at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, they are concerned with experimenting with collectivist approaches to art creation. Their films are expressions of non-hierarchy in action, both in the processes through which they are made and their collective approach to their chosen subjects. Their films have been shown at Edinburgh International Film Festival, Berwick Film and Media Festival, Kottishop (Berlin), Huset Biograf (Copenhagen) and Alchemy Film Festival (Hawick).
