A CREATIVE EUROPE CALL FOR PARTNERS
Our Shared Colonial Heritage and Europe Today
Across our continent we are witnessing a slide towards protectionism and nationalism, where the other is too often a threat, and the new and unknown a risk. In this Europe our borders become our protectors and our heritage our place of sanctuary. But what is this heritage we must protect, and where do the values and cultures come from that make up the Europe we know today?
2018 marks the European Year of Cultural Heritage. As a legacy to this programme, D6: Culture in Transit proposes a transnational project which explores the proposition that the very essence of European culture is defined by our colonising ancestors.
Thinking about now and then…
1 - Political frequencies
Our governments, the media and civil servants across the continent increasingly seek reassurance from the past. There is a long-standing and distinct trend to preserve known constructs of identity and to protect our sovereignty. The response to the complexities, diversity and expansion of our European communities continue to be met with the power play of fear-mongering, discrimination and exclusion. But why does our respective heritage become charged with idealism and fiction in this context? What are we attempting to protect for ourselves and from others?
2 - A shared heritage
The very essence of European culture is defined by our colonising ancestors. From the Greeks, to the Romans, the Ottomans and the Venetians who moved across and beyond the European borders we now know. From the seafaring nations of Northern and Western Europe embarking on crusades and trade missions in Africa, the Americas, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East, to the shifting national borders that define and redefine our nations.
Europeans have exploited, appropriated, imposed and foraged cultures and communities across the ages to build their Empires and craft their nation states. This legacy is a blueprint, which unfolds into a complex picture so often untold, unknown and contested, even today we question the authenticity of our citizens. The deeper reverberations of this legacy continually manifests in how we identify ourselves and others.
