CORNERS East Durham
From 19 – 30 September 2017, 9 international artists worked with communities in East Durham for our final CORNERS event. Working with our local partner East Durham Creates, we brought 3 remarkable projects to Horden, Shotton and Blackhall, all co-produced by D6 and our European colleagues.
Through a series of mapping workshops, people from Blackhall shared stories of social, environmental and industrial changes that have shaped the village today for [Voiceover]. From a child’s tale of a factory in Gdansk to a housing crisis in Zagreb; from an abandoned beach in Brindisi to a nightshift in the colliery in Blackhall, [Voiceover] reveals stories that are both specific and universal. Conversations, stories, readings, music and field recordings were be presented as a unique soundtrack shared both locally and across Europe through a live radio broadcast performed at Blackhall Community Centre from a Portable Online Broadcast Unit. Mobile Radio: Stories of Blackhall is a collaboration between artists Julie Myers (UK), Bojan Mucko (Croatia) and Lucyna Kolendo (Poland).
Residents of Shotton rediscovered their village through Safari Here. Through an accumulative process of workshops and curated spaces, Safari Here collect and re-interpret the unique stories and secrets of each place they visit, and in turn presents them back to their local audience through a travel agency, a unique guided tour, and short film. Safari Here is a collaboration between Maria Anastassiou (UK), Isabella Mongelli (Italy) and Milos Tomic (Serbia).
Through conversations with local people about the games they enjoy playing, Playground developed a multi-media playground space across public spaces in Horden, with a series of playable European games surrounded by film, audio recordings and lighting that recreate the atmosphere these games are played in. The games discovered through conversations with local people have been added to a growing compendium of games from across Europe, and will go on to be shared on other corners of the continent. Playground is a collaboration between Simon Farid (UK), Gianfranco Mirizzi (Croatia) and Riccardo Spagnulo (Italy).
Before our artists arrived in East Durham, D6 worked with local artists to prepare the way for the project to arrive. In Shotton, artists Nicola Balfour and Annette Poulson worked with participants from The Women’s Cree, the Art Group and the Youth Group at Shotton Community Centre to identify what they think is important in their village and their lives, and produced wooden and ceramic treasure chests. In Horden, D6’s Sharon Bailey and textile artist Sheila Biggs worked with groups from Horden Youth and Community Centre, Horden Parish Council and the Young Citizens Project to create a large textile board game inspired by important places in the village. In Blackhall, we worked with textile artist Victoria MacLeod at Blackhall Community Centre, the Brownies and the Women's Institute to create a multi-media textile map with embroidered pieces representing places in the village important to local people.
CORNERS East Durham was made possible by our partnership with East Durham Creates, alongside the continued support and involvement of our local partners: Blackhall Community Centre, Horden Youth and Community Centre, Horden Hub House, Horden Parish Council, Shotton Partnership, and Shotton Community Centre.
Designed and driven by cultural organisations working on the edges of Europe, CORNERS brings together artists and audiences through research, artwork, collaboration, and digital exchange. Corners is a collaboration between D6 (UK), Drugo More (HR), REX (RS), Pogon (HR), Exodos (SI), Intercult (SE), Teatro Publico Pugliese (IT), Dokufest (KO), San Sebastian 2016 (ES), CCI Gdansk (PL) Arts Council Northern Ireland (UK)
