CORNERS Arrives in East Durham
We are delighted to be working with our partner East Durham Creates and a number of local artists from the North East to develop work within Horden, Shotton and Blackhall, leading up to our CORNERS East Durham event in September.
Textile artist Sheila Biggs is creating a Horden Quilt alongside local people of all ages at Horden Youth and Community Centre. Using digital photography, print making techniques and sewing they are capturing places in Horden that have a local significance.
Artist Nicola Balfour and ceramicist Annette Poulson are working with local people at Shotton Community Centre to reveal the hidden treasures of Shotton. Local people are sharing the things that are most important to them in their community and creating small artefacts from these, which will be displayed in a museum of treasures.
Textile artist Victoria McLeod is working with local people including groups at Blackhall Community Centre and the Women's Institute to create a large textile map of Blackhall, revealing special places in the village.
Nine international artists will work closely with local groups to develop three projects for public spaces in East Durham taking place from 19th to 30th September.
Horden, Shotten, and Blackhall will each host a CORNERS project - an installation of games from across Europe in Horden, a walking trail around Shotton and a audio visual storytelling project that uses online radio to share gathered stories in Blackhall, with a number of public events and workshops taking place in the three areas, all of which are free.
