Contested Desires journeys to the Xarkis festival
Xarkis Festival, Agros, Cyprus
15-17 July 2022
From Barcelona to Barbados, Newcastle to Lagos, the Contested Desires journey continues to its final destination in Agros, Cyprus. We’re thrilled that the nine artists selected back in 2019 for the programme of residency exchanges over the past two years are coming together, joined with artists from all over the world, to take part in the Xarkis Festival. The nomadic international arts festival brings together artists and communities in the mountainous villages of Cyprus to create new, site specific and participatory works. The festival offers three days of workshops, live performances, concerts, screenings, interactive games and much more.
Contested Desires has provided a platform for artists to explore the complex and deep-rooted reverberations of colonisation and empire that continue to shape our countries and identities today. During their residencies the artists have responded to the theme in exciting, surprising and thought-provoking ways. We offer our thanks to the artists and partners for bringing about such rich and rewarding experiences and exchanges.
In parallel to the selection of the nine artists, Contested Desires launched a global film and video call inviting artists who identify as women to submit works in response to the conceptual framework of Contested Desires. Curated by our partner La Bonne, the beautiful short films illustrate and annotate the complexity and nuance of colonial legacies. They have been screened across heritage and gallery settings, and will conclude with a site-specific screening at the Xarkis Festival.
