CONTESTED DESIRES – UK RESIDENCIES
April 2022
D6 is delighted to welcome artists Marcio Carvalho and Dimitris Chimonas to our studio in Newcastle this month as part of the CONTESTED DESIRES programme. Later in April they will be joined by artist Mónica Rikić to share their artworks and work in progress in a group exhibition that addresses the colonial heritage that we share.
CONTESTED DESIRES is a collaborative project promoting creative international connections and development opportunities for artists and cultural professionals in our region in the North East of England, the rest of Europe and beyond. It is a platform for participants and communities to explore the complex and deep-rooted reverberations of colonisation, occupation and annexation that continue to shape our countries and identities today.
Working in the UK, Italy, Portugal, Cyprus, Spain, and Barbados, CONTESTED DESIRES digs deep to explore the links between our shared heritage.
The UK residencies will spill out from the D6 studios in Newcastle to take in research visits along the rural and urban sites of Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads Fort and Vindolanda in Northumberland, with opportunities to learn from and share ideas with cultural and heritage experts and local communities.
The CONTESTED DESIRES partnership includes: ECCOM, research and heritage training specialists based in Italy; La Bonne, a feminist arts organisation based in Spain; Xarkis, bridging traditional and contemporary practice through a nomadic contemporary festival across rural villages in Cyprus; LAC, a cross-artform residency and gallery space based in a former prison in Lagos, Portugal, and Fresh Milk, an arts organisation in Barbados supporting artists and writers from across the Caribbean.
Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK we are grateful for support from Arts Council England, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's Cultural Recovery Fund, National Trust, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund.
