CONTESTED DESIRES – UK Exhibition
30 April to 20 May 2022
The Lit & Phil Library, 23 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SE
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 9.30am-7pm
Tuesday 9.30am-8pm
Friday 9.30am-5pm
We are excited to announce the CONTESTED DESIRES UK exhibition, which brings together works by artists Marcio Carvalho (Portugal) and Dimitris Chimonas (Cyprus) created during their residencies at the D6 studio during April. Mónica Rikić (Spain) returns to Newcastle to share artworks created during her residency in 2021 for the group exhibition, which addresses the colonial heritage we share.
An international artist film and video programme accompanies the exhibition with short films by Mia Georgis, Mairead McClean, Elena Molina, Hussina Raja, Natalia Skobeeva and Lara Sousa.
CONTESTED DESIRES looks at new ways of exploring our shared and sometimes disputed colonial heritage and its influence on culture today. By inviting new perspectives from resident artists, it creates a space to raise the challenging aspects of Europe’s colonial heritage, with a view to expanding understanding and revealing often untold narratives.
The residencies have spilled out beyond our studio in Newcastle to take in research visits along the rural and urban sites of Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads Fort and Vindolanda in Northumberland. And with our partner the National Trust, we have explored our shared interest in Hadrian’s Wall and the stories that connect migration, settlement, colonialism and multiculturalism - from the historic to the present day.
We are presenting the work at the Lit & Phil an independent library established in the centre of Newcastle in 1793, which has provided the artists in residence with access to a rich and compelling resource for their research.
When: Saturday 30 April to Friday 20 May 2022 (preview on Friday 29 April)
Where: The Lit & Phil Library, 23 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SE
The CONTESTED DESIRES partnership includes: ECCOM, research and heritage training specialists based in Italy; La Bonne, a feminist arts organisation based in Spain; Xarkis, bridging traditional and contemporary practice through a nomadic contemporary festival across rural villages in Cyprus; LAC, a cross-artform residency and gallery space based in a former prison in Lagos, Portugal, and Fresh Milk, an arts organisation in Barbados supporting artists and writers from across the Caribbean.
Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK we are grateful for support from Arts Council England, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's Cultural Recovery Fund, National Trust, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund.
