colonialism and gender

IN February 2021, we attending a week of capacity building workshops ran by our Partner in Barcelona, laBonne. As a cultural organisation with a feminist focus, laBonne’s workshops centred on the relationships between gender and colonialism, presenting first hand perspectives of feminism and its relation to racism, colonialism, migration and discrimination.

The first session 'Race Narratives Perpetuating the Status Quo' featured a talk by international film maker Sally Fenaux, who discussed how stories can shape our unconscious bias, perpetuating discrimination and justifying racism, colonialism and violence. With her work, Sally explores how film and storytelling can be used to change the narratives that underpin our societies, challenging who are presented as protagonists and who is given a voice. You can view Sally’s film ‘Unburied’, a homage to the migrants abandoned in the Mediterranean Sea [trigger warning: this film addresses traumatic content] here on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/336558560.

Each of the following sessions was contextualised by a recorded discussion between two experts. Watch these discussions by clicking the links below:
