D6 signs national pledge to support those seeking sanctuary in the UK

It is profoundly concerning to see the Illegal Migration Bill voted through the House of Commons on 26 April. This Bill will make it almost impossible to seek safety in the UK. It will destroy the lives of our friends and neighbours.

In solidarity with people seeking sanctuary in the UK, D6 has signed a national pledge to defend the right to seek safety from war and persecution in the UK. A number of local organisations, including Curious Monkey, the West End Refugee Service and Action Foundation, have also signed the pledge.

We are proud to be an arts organisation in Newcastle - a City of Sanctuary - and to be leading Sanctuary and Culture, a programme which supports artists with lived experience of displacement and migration. We join with others in our community to oppose the 'anti-refugee' laws contained in the Nationality and Borders Act 2022.

Newcastle City Council has passed an unanimous motion defending the right to seek safety from war and persecution. People seeking sanctuary in Newcastle have spoken out against the Government’s plan and groups across the city have issued a joint statement condemning the Bill and calling on the Government to work with our communities to build a just, compassionate asylum system. You can read the full statement here.

Take action

To take action, you could email your MP asking them to oppose the Bill using Refugee Action’s simple online form, or take inspiration from City of Sanctuary’s suggested actions.
