colonialism and gender
Continuing our transnational programme, CONTESTED DESIRES, we’ve been attending capacity building workshops ran by Barcelona Partner laBonne. As a cultural organisation with a feminist focus, laBonne’s workshops have been centred around gender and colonialism, presenting first hand perspectives of feminism and its relation to racism, colonialism, migration and discrimination.
The sessions featured a talk by international film maker Sally Fenaux, who discussed how stories can shape our unconscious bias, perpetuating discrimination and justifying racism, colonialism and violence. With her work, Sally explores how film and storytelling can be used to change the narratives that underpin our societies, challenging who are presented as protagonists and who is given a voice. You can view Sally’s film ‘Unburied’, a homage to the migrants abandoned in the Mediterranean Sea [trigger warning: this film addresses traumatic content] here on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/336558560.
If you missed them, you can still listen to our Crafting Nations podcasts, a reflection on the UK capacity building aspect of CONTESTED DESIRES, written by poet Degna Stone: www.contesteddesires.eu/forum
