LAC Residency, CONTESTED DESIRES, Akeelah Bertram, 2020

Akeelah Bertram

Akeelah is one of two exceptional UK artists engaging in our transnational project CONTESTED DESIRES. Within CONTESTED DESIRES, Akeelah is interested in using digital art to explore the idea of complex cultural narratives. She is passionate about effecting change and shaping present day and future relationships between the many locations and culturesthat were formed as a result of colonialism. Participating in Contested Desires will be an opportunity to explore these themes alongside artists, institutions and communities willing to approach this difficult yet essential challenge.

Akeelah Bertram is a cross-disciplinary creator who specialises in making immersive experiences. She has exhibited nationally and internationally since studying at the University of Leeds, Hochschule für Bildende Künste, (Dresden) and the Royal College of Art (London). Her work involves creating fluid systems for collaboration and intuitive use, and often involves her shifting between the roles of artist and director. In 2019, Akeelah began a long-term international project about diaspora communities and the notion of portals, entitled Return. Her previous projects include exhibitions in Bangalore (IN, 2019) and Silvia (IT, 2017) as well as residencies in Berlin (2015) and London (2013).
