Welcoming Shirin Zeraaty
We warmly welcome Shirin Zeraaty as our curator in residence this September.
Shirin is a contemporary artist and curator originating from Zahedan in Iran.
Currently based in Istanbul, her work explores themes such as language, biography and the interpretation of works within the contexts of nationality, gender and institutional structures.
D6 has collaborated with Shirin over the past couple of years for programmes Assemble and ACT. She curated the online exhibition Belonging, which brought together 11 international artists with experience of forced displacement. Following this, Shirin selected five of the artworks and a new contribution by a Cypriot artist to appear in an exhibition at the Goethe Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus. The exhibition was part of a series of dialogues produced by our sister NGO D6:EU focusing on the rights of artists whose practice has been disrupted by forced migration and the role of culture in supporting people who are refugees.
She is the founder of the Art Corner of Tehran online platform, where she collaborates with Iranian artists to offer them an alternative space to showcase their work and introduce themselves.
She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sculpture from the Art University of Tehran. In July 2022, she completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the guidance of Professor Hermann Pitz.
With thanks to our partners: The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Newcastle Investment Fund and Arts Council England. And with thanks to: Hatton Gallery and Newcastle University.

Shirin presented a new edition of her award-winning project ‘Art in Context’. The project features 10 artworks by established artists but attributed to fictional artists, exploring how a piece of art is perceived when seemingly created by someone else and put in a different context.

Belonging is a virtual exhibition featuring the work of 11 artists whose practice has been disrupted by forced migration. Curated by Shirin Zeraaty, the virtual nature of the exhibition means that geography and mobility are not barriers to sharing these incredible artworks.
