Shirin Zeraaty: Art in Contex
An open studio event at D6: Culture in Transit
When: Monday 9 September, drop in anytime between 4pm to 7pm
Where: D6: Culture in Transit, 5, Charlotte Square, Newcastle, NE1 4XF (map)
We warmly invite you to an open studio to celebrate the residency of curator and artist Shirin Zeraaty.
Shirin will be presenting a new edition of her award-winning project ‘Art in Context’. The project features 10 artworks by established artists but attributed to fictional artists, exploring how a piece of art is perceived when seemingly created by someone else and put in a different context.
The work was created for Shirin’s diploma project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in July 2022. During the diploma exhibition, it was presented as an installation including a book containing works from the artists. The work received the academy’s Debutant prize, which enabled Shirin to showcase a second edition at the Villa Stuck Museum in Munich. For this exhibition, she invited artists to record their voices reading artists’ statements which were available via a large wallpaper of QR codes linking to the audio and images.
We are delighted that Shirin will be presenting a new edition of ‘Art in Context’ at D6.
We hope you can join us.
More about Shirin
Shirin’s work explores themes such as language, biography and the interpretation of works within the contexts of nationality, gender and institutional structures.
D6 has collaborated with Shirin over the past couple of years for the programmes Assemble and ACT. She curated the online exhibition Belonging, which brought together 11 international artists with experience of forced displacement. Following this, Shirin selected five of the artworks and a new contribution by a Cypriot artist to appear in an exhibition at the Goethe Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus. The exhibition was part of a series of dialogues produced by our sister NGO D6:EU focusing on the rights of artists whose practice has been disrupted by forced migration and the role of culture within refugee support.
She is the founder of the Art Corner of Tehran online platform, where she collaborates with Iranian artists to offer them an alternative space to showcase their work and introduce themselves.
She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sculpture from the Art University of Tehran. In July 2022, she completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the guidance of Professor Hermann Pitz.
