Roya Ghassemi Selected for Assemble Fellowship
My practice is driven by memory, migration, dreams, and the search for belonging. This fellowship is an opportunity to connect with different communities and explore how shared stories can build understanding across cultures.
Congratulations to Roya Ghassemi on her selection for the ASSEMBLE Fellowship.
Roya joins ASSEMBLE as the UK Fellow, alongside peers from Cyprus, Spain and Ukraine, to explore the climate emergency at the intersection of displacement, conflict and ecological decline.
Over the coming year, the four Fellows will develop projects and build communities around themes of mobility, belonging, care and collective action. As part of this fellowship, Roya will collaborate within a wider European network of ASSEMBLE partners and with fellows Mokia Dinnyuy Manjoh (Cyprus), Fabio Quintero (Spain) and Maria Proshkovska (Ukraine).
ASSEMBLE asks how we continue to build infrastructures of care, solidarity and creative practice amid climate crisis, displacement and conflict.
Based in the UK, and originally from Iran, Roya is an interdisciplinary artist, working across mixed media including ceramics, storytelling, drawing, photography, print, and digital art. Her work explores human experience, memory, the environment, wellbeing, and connection through material and conversational forms.
Deeply shaped by her life story, migration, and lived experiences, Roya's practice reflects an ongoing exploration of belonging, identity, and the relationship between personal and collective experiences.
ASSEMBLE brings together a dynamic partnership committed to fair and equitable rights for artists impacted by displacement.
Together, we will create vibrant spaces for curiosity, collaboration and critical thought. While short-term initiatives and emergency responses are important, ASSEMBLE focuses on what is needed to sustain long-term for artists, curators and cultural practitioners with lived experience of involuntary migration or displacement.
The programme embeds a shared vision around cultural rights, mobility-justice and freedom of expression.
Led by D6:EU (Cyprus) partners include Congress of Cultural Activists (Ukraine), Moving Artists (Spain) and the international mobility network On the Move, and associate partners: D6: Culture in Transit (UK), ARC – Artist at Risk Connection (France) and Larnaka2030 (Cyprus).
ASSEMBLE is funded by the European Union. In the UK, the project is supported by the Arts Council England.
