New Funded PhD Opportunity: CALL FOR ARTISTS, CURATORS and cultural practitioners
D6: Culture in Transit is delighted to be partnering with Professor Donna Chambers to offer a funded Collaborative Doctoral Award, at Northumbria University, Newcastle, supported by the Northern Bridge Consortium.
The PhD aims to critically examine the intersections between colonialism, climate crisis and mass human migration. We are looking for an applicant with a passion to build on their decolonial approaches to curatorial practice and a drive to develop collaborations with visual artists impacted by the themes.
The studentship will be based between Northumbria University and D6: Culture in Transit in Newcastle and there will be opportunities throughout the PhD to connect with D6’s major international programmes to reflect upon how decolonial arts practice can contribute to social justice. Who is involved
The PhD is supported by a dynamic academic supervision and advisory team.
Donna Chambers is Professor, Critical Cultural Studies, and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Arts at Northumbria. Most recently, she was Research Lead in the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Sunderland. She has 20 years’ experience in higher education teaching and research. Her work draws on critical and decolonial methodologies to understand how people and places are represented, primarily in cultural and heritage tourism as a form of human mobility. Fiona Crisp is Professor of Contemporary Art at Northumbria and is co-lead of the Cultural Negotiation of Science research group in the Department of Arts. Over the last 18 years she has been instrumental in shaping the practice-based research culture of the institution, most recently as Academic Impact Lead for Arts. Fiona’s artistic practice resides at the intersection of photography, sculpture and architecture and her work is represented by Matt’s Gallery, London. Sophia Yadong Hao is Director and Principal Curator at Cooper Gallery, Duncan and Jordanstone College of Arts and Design at the University of Dundee, Scotland. She is interested in curatorial approaches as a mode of critical inquiry that engages with culture and the political as an open question. At the Cooper Gallery, she leads an international programme recognised for its radical curatorial research, international approach and focus on critical inequities in contemporary art and culture. Clymene Christoforou is a founding member and executive director of D6, where she oversees programme and arts development, focusing on international collaboration and developing a strong international platform for local engagement. She is also a founding board member of D6:EU. She has led on a number of international programmes, including Contested Desires, a Creative Europe programme that explores perspectives on European colonisation and ACT (Artists Connecting in Transition), supporting artists in exile.
