On the move
D6 are members of On the Move, a unique network supporting artists and professionals to operate internationally while working to reimagine mobility as fairer, more diverse, and more sustainable. With members across Europe, America and Africa, On the Move provides information on cultural mobility that is clear, up-to-date and free to use. Drawing on the expertise of its network and partners, it publishes calls for artist residencies on its website, maintains a collection of more than 60 funding guides, and points to external guidance on specialist topics like visa and tax law.
On the Move also publish thematic reports and publications, undertake research, and design professional development programmes for artists and organisations, underpinned by a commitment to engaging with the context, environmental impacts and ethics of mobility.
Through the At Risk and Displaced Artists Working Group, we consider practices, common actions, advocacy tools, and, when opportunities arise, their experiences in public sessions.
In 2024, the working group pursued reflection on the quality of hosting displaced artists at risk – that is, rather than focusing on the amount of displaced artists and support schemes, attention is paid to issues such as how support mechanisms can best consider and respond to artists’ needs, which can vary over subsequent stages of relocation and settlement processes; how artists’ professional development needs can best be balanced with responses to their humanitarian and physical needs; and how a feeling of belonging can progressively emerge.
D6's director, Clymene Christoforou, is a board member of On the Move and it is in this forum that we often learn, build and evaluate our practice.
