D6: culture in transit

Join us on international Human Rights Day

 Tuesday, 10 December 2024
Star & Shadow, Warwick Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1BB (map)

D6’s work with artists is firmly rooted in the principles of freedom of expression and cultural rights. On the anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, so many people are experiencing enforced borders across lands, cultures and identities. In these precarious times, art can be a powerful medium to create spaces to raise consciousness and engage in solidarity.

Join D6 and our guest curator and host, Dima Karout, for a very special evening of art, performances and participation in a unique conversation with extraordinary artists whose work offers space to connect, reflect and inspire creative activism.

ART
We are delighted to be joined by Amak Mahmoodian and Paria Goodarzi who will present a brand new performance commissioned for this event.

We will share a recording of poetry by lisa minerva luxx, a writer and political activist of British Syrian heritage engaged in post-colonial and decolonial literature and the queer body politic.

A new online exhibition, (Re)Grounding will be on display - bringing together the work of artists seeking answers to environmental challenges rooted in the industrial and colonial pasts of Cyprus, the UK and Ukraine. Curated by Lucy Nychai it features work by Volt Agapeyev, Alexandra Clod, Dariia Dantseva, Dasha Podoltseva, Marisa Satsia, Oleksandr (Alex) Sirous and Karolina Uskakovych.

MUSIC

The Crossings Band will be on stage with their beautiful and energising mix of melodies from around the world.

FOOD

Delicious warm vegetarian food will be served by the fabulous chicbites.

(Re)Grounding is an urgent call to build solidarity towards environmental justice through new artwork. The online exhibition exposes the impact of industrial activity on the environment, with a particular emphasis on the effects of war.
