D6: culture in transit

Assemble - OPPOrtunities for artists

Our ASSEMBLE residences take an artist-centred approach to build care, trust and empathy and are aimed at artists artists with lived experience or heritage of displacement.

Taking place in D6’s studios in central Newcastle-upon-Tyne, all residencies give artists space and time for creativity in a safe and welcoming environment.  Artists are encouraged to develop their ideas and work at their own pace, often embracing the unplanned and unknown; we call this 'research as practice.'

D6’s team is always on hand to give support on all aspects of the residency. Artists are invited to communal meals in D6’s welcoming kitchen space, which is often a place to gather to share practice and ideas.

Each residency is tailored to the artist’s need. This can include:
  • Peer support from D6’s artists network, including our Associate Artists.
  • Collaboration with local partners and allies - for example, artists have spent time with African Lives in Northern England walking tour and Topsoil Gardening Club.
  • Professional and skills development opportunities with local partners - for example Northern Print.

If artists would like to share their practice more widely, we support them in presenting their practice to D6’s audiences and communities. This can be from informal open studios at D6 to presentations or performances at venues like the Star and Shadow.

We also give support in developing and sharing work for digital audiences
