OPEN CALL: ASSEMBLE - North East

ASSEMBLE is a new international arts programme exploring climate emergency at the intersection of involuntary migration, displacement, conflict and ecological decline.

D6: Culture in Transit will host a Fellowship open to Artists, Curators and cultural practitioners with lived experience of enforced migration, displacement or exile. This is open to practitioners based in the North East of England, seeking to (re)build their international curatorial practice and networks. Funded by the Arts Council of England, this opportunity enables a UK artist to join a Europe-wide cohort of artists and partners.

  • Duration: 12 months, June 2026–June 2027 (part-time and flexible with the exception of the international travel dates and group residency)
  • Fee: £7,740 fee and production budget of £5,280
  • Application deadline: Monday 20 April 2026, midday
Open Call Pack
The ASSEMBLE Fellowship in the UK is one of four taking place across the programme. Other ASSEMBLE Fellows will be based in Cyprus, Spain and Ukraine.

Over 12 months, each Fellow will produce a new curatorial project responding to climate emergencies with the option to consider how it intersects with conflict, displacement and ecological decline.

The Fellows will also engage in an international programme of activities offering immersive experiences for new knowledge and best practice to be shared, including:
  • Three curatorial labs taking place in Cyprus, Spain and a hybrid lab from Ukraine;
  • One group residency in the UK;
  • An international conference in Morocco;
  • A digital exhibition promoting the three curatorial projects.

Applicants must be able to travel internationally to Cyprus, Morocco, Spain, UK and Ukraine (the latter will be hybrid and travel will only be considered if government travel advice and the safety situation allows for this, and we will respect each person’s preference). If you are not able to travel to any of these destinations, please let us know in your application.

ASSEMBLE brings together a dynamic partnership committed to fair and equitable rights for artists impacted by displacement. Led by D6:EU (Cyprus) partners include Congress of Cultural Activists (Ukraine), Moving Artists (Spain) and the international mobility network On the Move, and associate partners:D6: Culture in Transit (UK), ARC – Artist at Risk Connection (France) and Larnaka2030 (Cyprus).

Together, we will create vibrant spaces for curiosity, collaboration and critical thought. While short-term initiatives and emergency responses are important, ASSEMBLE focuses on what is needed to sustain long-term for Artists, Curators and cultural practitioners with lived experience of involuntary migration or displacement. The programme embeds a shared vision around cultural rights, mobility-justice and freedom of expression.

 ASSEMBLE is funded by the European Union. In the UK, the project is supported by the Arts Council England.
