assemble artists' journeys

We take collaborative journeys with the artists and help foster new connections and opportunities for development.

From our studio in central Newcastle-upon-Tyne, we connect artists to a diverse group of local partners and allies to expand on thinking and offer expertise or inspiration.   You can read more about our artist-centred approach to residencies here.

Artists are encouraged to develop their ideas through a process of research and dialogue, with freedom to embrace the unplanned or unknown, adapt and work at their own pace; we call this 'research as practice.'

We aim to mutually deepen and develop the relationships with artists over a number of months and very often years, by prioritising the development of ideas and practice over short-term interactions.

featured artists

Thaís Muniz spent her residency at D6 in summer 2024, bringing together different elements of an ambitious body of work she has been developing since 2022. New Atlantic Triangulations  is a reflection on heritage and acquired identities - the project spans film, poems, flags and photography. Our Lead Producer Andrea Carter caught up with Thaís to reflect on her practice and time in residence at D6 this year - read more here.

Dima karout

Dima has over 15 years of experience in curating and producing exhibitions, managing art projects, and designing publications and public programmes.  Our history goes back to 2018, when we met at a Learning Lab at Tate Britain. Since then, we have drawn on her practice through residencies, the curation of public presentations and as a mentor for artists in exile across our programme.  She joined our team as an artist in residence, continued as an associate artist/researcher in an advisory role, and, from March 2024, as a board member. During this period, she has played a leadership role in shaping our ASSEMBLE and Sanctuary and Culture  programmes, mentoring artists, supporting communities and co-curating programmes with our team.

lucy Nychai

Following the full scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, artist and curator Lucy

joined us as a D6 curator in residence.  In this role, she has been instrumental in the design and delivery of (Re)Grounding, 2022-2025,  a UK-Ukraine-Cyprus residency programme with IZOLYATSIA (Ukraine), exploring the social, political and environmental injustices of the climate crisis, asking what must be done to bring about the drastic change needed.   This programme of research, residencies, exhibitions and talks culminates in an online exhibition, (Re)Grounding - From Beneath the Ground to the Guture ,  curated by Lucy and featuring artists from Ukraine, alongside artist collaborators from the UK and Cyprus, who have taken part in  the (Re)Grounding programme.

Shirin Zeraaty

Our journey with Shirin has developed over several years. Most recently, she spent time in Newcastle developing her practice at our studio and collaborating with Newcastle-based artist Alia Gargam. Shirin was a partner for our Artists Connecting in Transition project, which led to Belonging - an online exhibition curated by Shirin offering a virtual space for artists whose practice has been disrupted by forced migration to develop and share their work.

Paria Goodarzi

During her residency in Spring 2024, Paria explored the representation of exile, challenging abstract senses of distance and reflecting on the complexities of contemporary existence within the Iranian diaspora in Newcastle.  Paria also took part in our ASSEMBLE dialogues, which inspired an ongoing collaborative practice with artist Amak Mahmoodian leading to performances in Glasgow and in Newcastle for International Human Rights Day.

Amak Mahmoodian

Amak is one of the artists who took part in our project Artists Connecting in Transition, which connects artists whose practice has been disrupted by forced migration. During this she developed her project Dreams, which was selected for the digital exhibition Belonging.  Amak took part in our ASSEMBLE dialogues, which inspired an ongoing collaborative practice with artist Paria Goodarzi leading to performances in Glasgow and in Newcastle for International Human Rights Day.

Hamzeh Al HussiEn

We welcomed Hamzeh and Curious Monkey Theatre to the D6 studios in 2023 for a development residency for Penguin, Hamzeh’s one-person show exploring his life from Syria to Gateshead.  Prior to this, Hamzeh and Amy presented an early 'sketch' performance of Penguin at our celebration on International Migrants Day 2019.  Following a successful UK tour in 2024, Hamzeh is now taking Penguin to Jordan and France.
