Jenn E Norton

Jenn E Norton, Wee Requiem, 2010
Single screen, HD video with sound, 6 minutes

Playing with the elastic qualities of digital technologies, Jenn E Norton rewrites history by recasting a fallen nuisance, a pest, as a beloved protagonist. The medium of video allows us to substitute memories, the opportunity to remember an event differently than originally experienced through re-contextualized imagery. Wee Requiem (2010) pays révérence to the smallest and seemly most insignificant, through digital gestures. For the duration of the work we observe a wee requiem for the passing of a mouse.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jenn E Norton is an artist working with interdisciplinary media including video, installation, sound and kinetic sculpture to produce performative, critically engaged work. Playing with the elastic qualities inherent of digital technologies Norton’s diversepractice broaches ideas surrounding the immateriality of the media she employs, and representation within the complex relationship between artist and viewer. Through this approach, Norton’s practice reaches an uncanny intimacy between the subject matterand the viewer, often in a self-reflexive manner.

Norton has recently shown at the Art Gallery of Ontario, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Rooftop Films Summer Series in Brooklyn, NY, The Canadian Film Centre's World Wide Short Film Festival in Toronto, The Yukon Art’sCentre, The Winnipeg Film Group's Cinematheque, The KWAG Biennial inKitchener, Ontario and Pleasure Dome’s New Toronto Works. She was a featured artist at CAFKA.11, where in addition to premiering her immersive, interactive, 3D videoinstallation created during her 2011 residency with CAFKA and Christie Digital, sheexhibited a 3D animated public projection at Kitchener’s City Hall (Ontario, Canada). She has won numerous grants, awards and scholarships, including the OCAD Integrated Media Medal for excellence in an interdisciplinary practice.
